Detach to Attach: Seeing the Bigger Picture

This message taught by Transformation Church’s Brie Davis is so amazing and spot on for me. I’ve been extremely focused as of late on really trusting God, diving into purpose, removing pride, and truly becoming like Christ by living a life of love. Have I mastered any of this? Not completely. But I’m working everyday, and God is ever faithful. I hope that this message is as much of a blessing to you as it has been to me.

  • Sometimes as believers we can be over spiritual and God is calling for balance.

  • Sometimes we aren’t over spiritual we are under spiritual.

  • Sometimes we forget that God has given us a tool called The Holy Spirit.

Jesus wasn’t over spiritual or under spiritual. He was relatable but he also knew the power that lived inside of him.

    There is a bigger picture

Zechariah 4:6 NIV

'So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. '

  • There is a spiritual world that you live in that you have to stay aware of.

To live out God’s bigger picture you will have to:

    1. Detach: Make the small things, the small things.

    2. Attach: Make the big things, the big things.

What are the things in your life that are the small things that you have made the big things; and the big things the small things?

Things to detach and attach to:

    1. Detach from busy and attach to becoming.

  • In our society busy is a badge of honor; people love being busy because it makes them feel important. In all that busyness, who are you becoming?

Luke 10:41-42 NIV

' “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”'

While Martha was busy, Mary was BECOMING

  • How many times do we ask ourselves, “who am I becoming”?

  • Mary knew the bigger picture, the bigger picture was; what type of person was she going to become.

2 Corinthians 3:18 NLT

'So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.'

  • To become it requires us to lean into the Holy Spirit in our lives.

  • The Glorious Image of God is LOVE. Love is not a character trait of God, it is God; He is love.

  • A sign of a mature believer is not how much Word you know, the sign of a mature believer is; How do you love.

  • If you aren’t becoming love, you aren’t maturing.

  • A sign of maturity is how well we love ourselves as well as the people around us.

We should ask ourselves, not only who are we becoming but are we becoming love.

    2. We have to detach from trying and attach to trusting.

Hebrews 11:6 NIV

'And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. '

Sometimes as believers we spend more time trying to please God than trying to trust him.

  • If we have put God in the box of trying to please him instead of trying to trust him, we belittle our relationship to something that relies on our works instead of Him and His Grace.

Philippians 2:13 NLT

'For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.'

  • You don’t have to try to please God, you just have to trust him.

  • Your works, efforts, and energy are not the tools He’s given you to please Him, He has given us The Holy Spirit.

    3. Detach from Pride and attach to Purpose.

  • The ways of the enemy will always tempt you.

1 John 2:15-16 NLT

'Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. '

  • Pride is something we all deal with.

Pride separates us from our purpose.

  • God doesn’t share his throne with us.

  • Pride is an inflated view of ourselves.

  • Pride starts when you have to prove your worthiness to others.

To stay in a place of purpose means to:

Stay in a place of Service, because purpose is always directly linked to people and you have to stay in a place of Humility because purpose is always bigger than you.

  • In order to move toward purpose it requires humility.

Galatians 5:22-23 GNT

'But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these. '

  • What are you spending your time and energy on and why?

    4. Detach from empty and attach to eternal.

Matthew 16:21-23 NLT

'From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”'

  • How much energy are you spending attached to the earthly things?

As always I hope this blessed you, please remember to listen to this sermon for yourself because you may catch some things that I missed.
