The Number One Reason Why Everyone Should Go To Therapy

Before I begin let me preface this by saying EVERYONE NEEDS THERAPY AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE PERIOD.

I want to really hammer that point in because a lot of Christians think that they don’t need to see a therapist and that we as Christians should not struggle with mental health issues which is most certainly not the case. Did God give us a sound mind according to 2 Timothy 1:7? Yes. But we are also carnal in nature which is why God tells us to renew our minds daily in Romans 12:2. Also, God created therapist. He knew that human beings with all of our flaws and missteps would need someone to talk to in order to work through our baggage. Should we cast our burdens on God as stated in 1 Peter 5:7? Yes. But, we should also seek wise counsel as told in Proverbs 11:14. Do you see where I’m going here? God should be our number one source, but He also thought enough of us to create tools to help us deal with life on the Earth that He created.

Now that we all understand that everyone at some point needs therapy, let’s discuss the number one reason everyone should go to therapy.

If you asked me to explain my childhood to you, I would probably say that I grew up in a two-parent household where I was taught that Christ was the only way. I would say that my parents were a bit stricter than most and that I spent the first ten years in my home as an only child. I would also tell you that my childhood when compared to most was normal; I participated in after-school clubs and activities, was able to travel, and was well taken care of.

I had a therapy session a few weeks ago that completely shattered what I would’ve said had someone actually asked me this question.

Although I was blessed enough to have a really good upbringing that doesn’t change the fact that trauma happened whether intentional or not.

We are not perfect people, I think it’s extremely important to note this. The mere fact that we are imperfect people is why no matter how hard we try, we inevitably mess up. That’s what the grace of God is for.

Which is why everyone needs therapy at some point in their life.

No matter how cheery and light your life has been on the surface, at some point, something has happened that undoubtedly affected you. That thing, whether you realize it or not has changed the way you view the world, interact with people, look at yourself, and possibly react in certain situations. The reason I can say this with confidence is that it’s a realization that I’ve had to deal with myself lately. The world around us shapes us, no matter how Godly we consider ourselves to be.

Being in Christ does not mean that you won’t experience unfortunate situations, it means that with God at your side and leading you, that you can overcome anything the world throws at you.

The number one reason everyone should go to therapy is that no one is immune to trauma.

The smallest things can inadvertently shape our outlook on life. The best way to identify those things is to speak with a therapist.
